Red carpet night anyone? Local author and publisher Arlene Brathwaite’s latest book “Darkest Before Dawn” has been made into a film, and this weekend Linda audiences will get a sneak peek at it.
Brathwaite is the author of a number of urban fiction and romance titles, and her earliest works, “Youngin'” and “‘Ol Timer” are inspired by some of the difficult events in her life. “We should allow our inner selves to be free to express whatever comes the surface,” Brathwaite says of her work.
Brathwaite also owns the Book Club, a dynamic cafe that runs teen book clubs and hosts performances. The business is located in the Coliseum on Pearl Street.
Filming for the movie takes place in Albany, and shots from the set can be found online. Es-Class Enterprise, another local company with roots in music production, is filming and producing the movie in true Hollywood style, with makeup, talent, and local celebrities Bad Seed, Es-Class, and K. Mojavi Wright, one of the founders of Urban Guerilla Theatre (UGT), a spoken word performance group that uses poetry, music and spoken word to explore personal and public issues.
The preview will be part of UGT’s third annual Naughty or Nice event, where audience members pick sides at the door, and enjoy performances that celebrate both our good and bad sides. This is an amazing night of entertainment with spots on the program for every kind of medium, including film, music, poetry, literature, art, and even food. You don’t want to miss this unforgettable look at life.
Show starts at 9pm on December 17 at the Linda, WAMC’s Performing Arts Studio, 339 Central Avenue. Albany, NY 12206. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For more info, visit the website www.wamcarts.org.
