Dowd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please check your calendars. Please note that today&#8217;s date is Sept. 1. Please note that SUMMER IS NOT OVER.<\/p>\n<p>It is not even close to being over despite the tedious references we keep hearing from back-to-school shoppers, TV beings, and assorted bitchers and moaners.<\/p>\n<p>Summer began on June 21 and will end on Sept. 21. Thus, we have three weeks of it left. It does not matter that various school terms might fool you into thinking it&#8217;s time to pack away the plaid shorts and plastic flip-flops. There actually are &#8212; hold onto your straw hats &#8212; PEOPLE WHO DON&#8217;T HAVE KIDS IN SCHOOL.<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who inhabit <i>Weathering Heights<\/i> up here above the Hudson are among that crowd. We did our duty, sending a batch of offspring through local public schools and college and out into life more or less equipped to deal with it. (But, don&#8217;t get me started on how I feel about some of their choices.)<\/p>\n<p>For lo these many years now, we have been enjoying the fruits of our labor: i.e., an actual summer season that we refuse to release until Sept. 21, at the very earliest. If we run into an Indian Summer, assuming that in this maddeningly politically correct world we&#8217;re still allowed to use that term, so much the better.<\/p>\n<p>(Posted 09\/01\/07)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By William M.
