Suppose you leased a movie theater, and the roof suddenly caved in? You would probably get on the phone to your landlord, and tell him/her to get their ass on over and take care of it. Well, in the case of Palace Performing Arts Center, the tenants of the 81 year old building, that call would be to the city of Albany. Monday night, the Albany Common Council, unanimously approved a new ten year lease agreement with the non-profit organization. Part of the agreement states that the city would be responsible for any major structural repairs to the building. As it should be. I guess all those questions from a member of the common council about the building have been answered Hopefully, PPAC will no be able to concentrate their efforts on bringing events to the theater in beleaguered downtown Albany.……….Speaking of downtown Albany. The popular — or in this case not so popular — downtown nightspot Jillian’s is closing it’s doors Saturday night. Jillian’s used to be an anchor downtown, and was part of the ”downtown revitalization” dreams of Jerry Jennings back in the mid 90’s. Since then the bars come and go, struggling to make money in a overcrowded market. With so much to do elsewhere in Albany, nobody wants to go downtown. Especially late night. Not since the days of the old hotels and restaurants has downtown Albany been popular. And I’m talking the days of my parents.……….It is good to see DA candidate Lee Kindlon ramping up his assault on David Soares, at least on Twitter anyway. I have noticed an abundance of his signs popping up around the city, including my neighborhood (I live in the 15th.) The Times Union even ran a piece about Soares’ upcoming trial for defamation in Florida, which it probably didn’t have to, furthering some negative opinion. Now I guess, Kindlon will finally, or maybe, get to be on the same stage with Soares at a series of forums; one sponsored by the Council of Albany Neighborhood Associations, and the other by the League of Women’s Voters. Both however are on the same night; CANA starting at 6:30, and LOWV at 8:00. I’m sure that CANA will let the DA’s go first so that Soares can attend both. Kindlon says he will attend both. Mr. Soares: It might be in your best interest to attend both. It’s time you answered some questions. The events are on Sept. 5th; CANA is at the main branch of the library, LOWV at the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road.
