Q. When I walk my dog, she wants to chase anything that moves – joggers, bicycles, skateboards, even cars and motorcycles. What should I do?
A. If your dog is genetically predisposed to herding (Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Corgis) or is a sighthound (Greyhounds, Whippets, Borzois) the speedy passing of moving objects is just too tempting. The instinct to chase takes over. Dogs with high energy levels can’t resist, either.
Here are some things to try:
1. First, expose your dog to bicycles and skateboards that are
NOT in motion. Walk him past the object, keeping his attention on you with praise and treats. Have a helper ride the bike or jog slowly past – divert, praise and treat. Gradually increase the speed of movement.
2. A tired dog won’t feel so compelled to chase potentially dangerous moving objects. Take your dog into a fenced area and wear him out by dragging an old towel or blanket after you, encouraging him to chase it.
3. Look for herding or agility classes to channel some of that energy into acceptable and rewarding activities.
