A: Running – really exercise in general – is a great way for you and your dog to get healthy. Exercise benefits human and animal muscles, bones, digestion, sleep, circulation, AND it enhances the bond between you and your dog. Plus, it will help both of you lose weight!
- Start by consulting with your veterinarian before starting an exercise program with your dog.
- At first, take things slowly, to help increase strength and stamina.
- Walk or run on surfaces like dirt or grass to give your dog’s paw pads time to toughen up.
- Avoid exercising your dog immediately before or after he’s eaten.
- Make the walk or run interesting. Vary your pace. Walk fast, then slow, then stop short.
- Stop when your dog seems to be getting tired.
- Remember to have drinking water for you AND your dog.
- Carry poop bags for clean up duty.
If your dog pulls on the leash, weaves back and forth, or lunges towards people or other dogs, call a professional dog trainer to help you get back on track!
