A: Most dogs love visitors as much as we do, but dogs don’t always know the right way to behave when guests arrive. A well-behaved dog
with good manners reflects well on you, the owner and helps your company feel more comfortable, too.
Teach your dog to Sit for all the good things you give him every day – his meals, treats, toys, petting, games, his leash, before getting into the car, and before going out the door.
If your dog understands that Sit is the magic way to get what he wants, he will Sit more readily even when visitors come. Once he is sitting and calm, your guests can say hello to him.
Don’t wait to have company show up unexpectedly and then struggle to get your dog under control. Practice having family members come to your door, ask him to Sit, and praise him for doing so.
Remember your dog doesn’t know what you want unless you are clear and consistent with your requests of him.
Teaching your dog proper visitor etiquette is always appreciated by everyone you and your dog encounter. Not only does it make you and your dog look good, but guests will enjoy his company knowing you have your dog under control.
