About this event
Did you know that chocolate played a crucial role in the colony’s revolution and in the overall foundation of our country – with the epicenter here in the Hudson Valley?
Visit Crailo State Historic Site on Saturday, March 22 from 11 AM – 12:30 PM, for our third Colonial Kitchen program, Van Wyck’s Chocolate Haus, which invites visitors to learn about this fascinating history while 18th century chocolate beverages are prepared before them, as was done in the Chocolate Houses of the period. After preparation using 18th century recipes and equipment over a hearth fire, visitors will be invited to sample the results (please note: recipes typically contain alcohol and/or dairy).
This program was created by the late Paul Supley of Ballston Lake, who dedicated his life to pursuing and sharing stories of the Mohawk, Schoharie and Hudson Valleys. Van Wyck’s Chocolate Haus will take place in Crailo’s hearth kitchen and will be led by 18th century living historian Johanna Case, Schoharie County Historical Society Interpreter Nate Hoffman, and Dan Beams, Curator at The Old Stone Fort Museum / SCHS.
Fee for this program is $20.00 per person, payable by cash or check. Space is limited, so please reserve your place by calling Crailo at (518) 463-8738: deadline 3/20. Snow-date: Sun., 3/23.
Other programs offered in this series are the following:
- Saturday, 4/5: Preparing a 17th Century Meal
- Saturday, 4/12: Colonial Beer Brewing
Once part of the Van Rensselaer family’s vast landholdings, today, Crailo is the museum of the colonial Dutch. Through archaeological research, exhibits, guided tours and educational programming, Crailo tells the complex stories of the early Dutch, Indigenous and African inhabitants of the upper Hudson River Valley. The museum is located at 9 ½ Riverside Ave in historic Rensselaer. For further information about this Colonial Kitchen Series, please call (518) 463-8738 or visit our social media.
