One of my favorite warnings to give people is that many times, job search and hiring are often clouded by the “I don’t like you” tactic. Sometimes, people won’t hire you because you don’t like the same sports team, you have a voice that annoys them, or other things that are out of your control.
Don’t let it discourage you; you probably don’t want to work for someone like that anyway.
If I were to have some silly reasons not to hire people, they would include the following:
1. People I pass on the road who leave a pyramid of snow on the top of their car when driving, and don’t blink an eye when it flies off their car into an unexpecting victim behind them. (I think I may start writing down license plates and keep track, in case these people ever apply to work for me.)
2. People who take pictures of themselves in the mirror with a phone in their hand and then post them on the internet.
3. People who order a triple soy double pump latte at a coffee shop and then get snooty when the person they are with only orders a black coffee or a plain old tea.
What annoyances would discourage you from hiring someone? I’ll post your responses in a future column.
