A disturbing trend in society is when seemingly ordinary people alternate between inferiority and superiority complexes, an affliction I call eerieority. Eerieority occurs when people alternate between not believing in themselves and needing constant reminders of their importance, and the other extreme of believing too much in themselves and needing constant reminders of their importance.
To balance the need for support and the need for humility, it is important to remember that we are all different, just like everyone else! Ask for support before you need it, and always look for ways to be humble about your success. As Joe Torre once said about the 1996 Yankees, “inner conceit” is a great concept. Adopt a philosophy of not needing outside influences to tell you how good (or how bad) you are performing. Become more self-aware and be your own worst critic and your own biggest fan.
