Good for you is a compliment I never take well. To me, a “good for you” expresses either a lack of care for someone’s good news or a cop out of a compliment where no compliment at all would be better.
Similarly, people who say “that’s funny” when something is funny aren’t really amused, because if they were they’d actually laugh.
The next time you give a compliment to someone, choose a genuine smile or a pat on the back over a “good for you”.
