As I was reading an email from a colleague the other day, I was reminded of just how unprofessional writing in the workplace has become. awfkb, fyi, f2t, and many, many other meaningless letters and numbers strung together to…..what? Answer a business question or offer your “professional” opinion? I think not! This is just yet another sign of the laziness that modern technology has given to our generation.
Afaict (As far as I can tell) this needs to stop asap in the workplace and be returned to texts between friends. Or not, why do our family and friends need to be able to code speak to understand a text message from you? The rest of the world shouldn’t need a slang dictionary to understand your cryptic messages.
The most important reflection of you and your work is in the form of your communication skills and if you are using text slang in a professional correspondence you are showcasing yourself as lazy and don’t think that your boss isn’t paying attention. In the business world, making a good impression and projecting yourself as mature, intelligent, confident, and professional is critical to long-term success. Inappropriate language can negatively affect your credibility and put off or even offend those you work with. Proper English, both written and verbal are the only forms of communication you should be using in the workplace.
