What we learn in the ivory walls and lecture halls is meaningful, but very often our best experiences come by traveling to new places and meeting new faces.
For me, it was spending nearly 5 years at the Walt Disney Company in Orlando, FL. I was one of the first members of my family to venture outside the comforts of New England, and it was eye-opening; I got to meet people from all over the country and all over the world.
When it came time to consider my next move in life in 2000, the most logical move was to come home to the Northeast. I spent a year in the Boston area before moving back to the tri-state area which I’ve called home once again since 2001.
Lebron James, in his return to home, reflected fondly on his experiences in Miami and also referred to them as “his college”. It brought back great memories for me of my experiences in Florida, and made me realize just how special that time was and still remains.
Lesson – never miss the chance to explore some places away from friends and family to add enrichment to your life and career.
