While Brett and I were in Maine over the Memorial Day weekend, we spent a night at the cutest little bed & breakfast. (Y’all it looked like something out of Southern Living!) We’d never stayed in one before so it was a whole new experience for us.
Brett found The Brewster Inn, located in Dexter, ME (which I find funny because I grew up next to the town of Dexter, MO) on priceline and booked a night’s stay. We had no idea what kind of history we would learn during our visit!
You’ll find The Brewster Inn on the National Register of Historic Places. The really cool thing is that it’s also the family home of former Maine Governor and Senator Owen Brewster. Did you ever see The Aviator? Alan Alda played Senator Brewster, who was in charge of the Government task force that tried to bring Howard Hughes down. The Brewster Inn has put a roof over the heads of Presidents Truman and Taft and Louis B Mayer, the founder of MGM Films (…plus us!).
Back in 1934, the home was remodeled by architect John Calvin Stevens and was recently featured on HGTV on “If Walls Could Talk”. Our room featured the cutest little details…after all, how many hotels do you stay at that have rubber ducky soap dispensers?? Plus, it was really nice that we had our own bathroom too!
These days the Inn is run by Mark and Judith Stephens who moved all the way from England to run the place. Mark was wonderful to check us in, carry our luggage up and help us to our room…we were so impressed the next morning when we gobbled down his amazing sausage and creme cheese croissants! (I seriously think I had four!) There is just something wonderful to waking up and smelling breakfast cooking in the kitchen!
The Stephens have worked to restore the grounds surrounding the inn. The gardens behind the B&B are amazing!
We really enjoyed our first stay in a B&B and loved the beautiful atmosphere the Brewster Inn provided. Probably the best customer service we’ve ever had in a hotel! You can find the Brewster Inn online at brewsterinn(dot)com. If you’re ever up in that neck of the woods in Maine, check it out…it’s defiantly worth the trip!
Thank you Heather and Brett for the great write up on the Brewster Inn. It certainly is an amazing place that no one expects to find in a small town in the middle of Maine. So much history and unique and special at the same time.
Right now i’m reinstalling the original pond and fountain. Both are in and working and we’re now working on the very large butterfly garden that is in the shape of a butterfly. Its going to look truly amazing by the end of this year.
