Recently, I was contacted by a room mother at the All Saints Academy in Albany to speak to a group of 2nd graders. The school regularly has “Mystery Readers” stop by to read books to the students and talk about their jobs and what they do. It’s really a great way to expose kids to different occupations and to include the community in their education.
I was so excited (and flattered) to have the opportunty to read to the kids! My biggest concern was what to read though…since we don’t have a lot of reading materials (yet) for small children, I was super thankful when my mother-in-law (and former kindergarten teacher) Taryn helped me pick out a couple of books.
I loaded myself down with selections like Officer Buckley and Gloria, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, I See Santa Everywhere and The Dog Who Saved Christmas, and braced myself for what could have been my toughest live audience yet!
I was so relieved when the kids in Mrs. Kienzle’s class had tons of questions about blogging and why I liked to write for albany.com. Although none of them had ever visited Missouri, Arkansas or Mississippi, they had plenty of stories to tell about their own travels.
Plus, they didn’t seem to notice my big ol’ belly…bless their hearts, such great kids!
