We’re always looking for something fun to do during the summer and any reason to be outside is a good one with us! When Brett stumbled across a sign for the Schuylerville Cardboard Boat Races while driving, we had to find out more.
Turns out, the boat races are just a part of the annual Canal Splash, which celebrate New York State canals. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the rainy weather postponed the event until Sunday. Set along the bank of the Champlain Canal on the Hudson River, folks of all ages come out to see if they can get their self-made contraptions to float!
This year’s theme was “Birds of a Feather” and there were some pretty creative entries.
Trying to get your boat to float is just one of the challenges. Rules prohibit folks from using staples and oil based paints, but participants are welcome to use as much duct tape, caulk and glue they can get their hands on.
We got to see the kid’s division. These little guys had to be at least 7-years-old before they could set sail. Personally, I thought they were pretty brave!
Not every boat made the journey around the bridge and back in one piece. These poor kids had to swim back in!
Bless their hearts!
