With the resignation of Eric Holder comes proof positive that even the inside circle is finally aware of what the politically savvy Clintons recognized months ago; the Age of Obama is over. Although Holder’s resignation was not totally unexpected, the fact that it occurred before the election is no doubt a concession that the Democrats expect to lose the Senate, and need the time to have his replacement approved before the Republicans take over.
With Obama’s popularity at an all time low, and a foreign policy crisis at hand (and foreign policy is hardly the President’s forte), the sun is setting on the days of hope and change, and the President’s chickens are coming home to roost. Who would have thought in the days of greek columns and fainting spells, that the day would come when the silver tongued messiah would be cast aside like yesterday’s fast food, no longer palatable… just stinking up the place. Truth is eternal, but lies generally have a shelf life; the liar, or in this case the politician, hopes the shelf life is long enough to achieve the desired result. Obama’s misrepresentations about the Affordable Care Act brought him success with the sweeping legislation, and his fabrication of “the war on women”, may have gotten him reelected when he probably shouldn’t have been based on his record. Unless it was his intention to lower the stature of The United States throughout the world you would be hard pressed to cite many other areas where he has had policy successes despite his dishonesty. For this at least, I suppose we should be grateful. Try as he may, the “blame Bush” strategy doesn’t play like it used to, and even one-time supporters are beginning to see that they have been sold snake oil. He is not the savior of America, he is not the great post-partisan unifier, he is not even that smart… he is just a typical politician, playing politics instead of serving the country.
And so the President must now take his place beneath the bus he has helped throw others under. If he goes willingly, his position as the first black President may allow him to finish his term without venturing into the Richard Nixon/Jimmy Carter realm of dishonor, but those of his administration or party who envision themselves to have a political future will quietly unhitch their wagons and create distance from his political ebola. That will likely happen quickly, like dominoes falling. If his narcissism prevents him from just fading into the sunset, going to fundraisers, and taking one for the team, and it may, then he may find himself without many friends.
IMHO: Six years ago we elected a President based on qualifications that have nothing to do with being an effective President. If intelligence had been involved we could call it a grand experiment, one we could hopefully learn from. Unfortunately, Obama’s election had more to do with naiveté, gullibility, and guilt. These are not deep intellectual processes, but they are durable, and not easily educated out. The same voters who twice gave us Barack Obama will be voting in 2016. The sun may be setting on the Age of Obama, but what will tomorrow’s sunrise reveal about the future of America? We have two years.
