March is here already, and green things are beginning to grow — if only on the screen. Take shelter from winter’s last chill with one of the films opening this week.
Jack the Giant Slayer (PG-13) — Starring Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Minister of Magic (that is, Ewan McGregor and Bill Nighy), among others, Bryan Singer’s (The Usual Suspects, X-Men: First Class) treatment of the classic English folk tale opens this week. Poor Jack always creates problems when he climbs that beanstalk.
Playing at: Crossgates, Colonie Center, the Madison, East Greenbush, Bow Tie Schenectady, Rotterdam Square, Regal Clifton Park, Emerald Amsterdam, Hudson.
The Last Exorcism (Part 2) (PG-13) — Just when you thought it was safe, poor Nell’s evil possessor returns.

Phantom (R) — I’m a sucker for Cold War nostalgia. Thermonuclear submarine warfare movies? Yes, please. This latest in the genre stars Ed Harris (Glengarry Glen Ross, A History of Violence, The Truman Show) as the captain and David Duchovny (Kalifornia, X-Files, Return to Me) as the on-board KGB political officer. Alone in deep water, will they be able to avert the catastrophe, before it’s too late?
