Read on for full details, and about the film:
About the film…
The movie will be in limited release to just 19 theaters, on July 5th. A wide release is currently set for July 19th in the Albany area. Now’s your chance to see this great family film!
Without having seen the it, the best comparison, at least for tone, might be Little Miss Sunshine, though this film is rated PG-13. It’s written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the Oscar award winning authors of another family comedy/drama, The Descendants, starring George Clooney. The writers can be seen here during their acceptance speech at the 84th Academy Awards, where Jim Rash’s impromptu pose proved just the first parody of Agnelina Jolie’s infamous leg pose, which quickly went viral as a web meme.
Whereas The Descendants centered on Clooney as a Hawaiian landowner confronted with the realization he’s out of touch with his family, and forced to quickly mend long deteriorating fences, The Way, Way Back centers on one summer for 14 year old Duncan, an awkward teen finding his place in the world. Like The Descendants, and despite a minimalist budget, TWWB sports a robust supporting cast: Steve Carell, AnnaSophia Robb, Maya Roudolph, Amanda Peet, Sam Rockwell, Rob Corddry, Toni Collette, writers (also established actors) Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, and Robert Capron (sidekick in The Wimpy Kid series),
If Duncan looks familiar to you, he’s played by Liam James, who also plays Det. Linden’s son on AMC’s The Killing, and he’s also the original ‘Young Shawn’ on USA’s Psych, a role held until he was called out within an episode as getting too old to play the same age character any longer.
Critical Praise…
A Sundance Film Festival official selection and fan favorite, and Newport Beach Film Festival Audience Award winner, The Way, Way Back rates 7.4 on IMDB, with a ridiculously top heavy voter graph, where a full 33% of viewers rated it a 10 out of 10. It’s currently enjoying an 88% on Rottentomatoes.com (92% for top critics), with 92% of audience members endorsing it, with an average 4.1 out of 5 starts.

I think people won’t realize how cool the t-shirts are until after they see the film, which was great!
I suspected as much.
An interesting fact: Water Wizz is a real place, in Massachusetts, near Cape Cod. The movie was filmed during regular hours, so many extras are, in fact, regular guests of the park.
Film looks really good. Cannot wait to see it. I hear the shirt is iconic for sure.
These shirts look awesome. Thanks albany.com for the opportunity!
awesome water wizz shirt! love it
im not sure if you are doing this contest still for the tshirt but i loved this movie and thought it was the best movie I’ve seen this year.
Lea,
Absolutely. It was pointed out to me that there probably wouldn’t be much interest until after the movie was released. So, I’ve extended the window a couple of weeks.
