Pacific Rim is a pet project of Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). Having seen trailers in both 2D and 3D, be informed: in 2D, it looks a bit cartoony. 3D comports the sense of massive scale appropriate to these creatures that are 10 stories tall. No doubt thanks to del Toro’s skilled helming, Rim is currently rating about 71% on RottenTomatoes – very good for a monster mash, and fairly obscure brand.
