Guilderland, NY - A Residential Capital District City
Located slightly north and west of the city of Albany, Guilderland is primarily a residential city that is home to approximately 34,000 residents. The area includes various retail, manufacturing, office and research facilities, as well as several nature preserves.
One of the most prominent attractions in Guilderland is its proximity to the Pine Bush Nature Preserve. One of the few inland pine barrens in the world, the Preserve is over 3,000 acres of protected land that is home to more than twenty rare species of endangered animals and plants. Known as the "pine barrens", the area is a valuable recreational resource with trails for hiking, jogging, cross country skiing and mountain biking.
Recreation of all types is a highly valued resource in this lovely residential community, with several parks that have soccer and ball fields, basketball courts and playgrounds. The Tawasenta Park has areas for fishing and boating as well as a swimming pool, a pavilion, picnic areas and grills for public use. Several excellent golf courses and country clubs thrive in and around Guilderland. The Capital District is home to the Empire State Plaza complex, many museums, galleries and theaters.
The Guilderland School District has approximately 5,700 students in five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Their academic program is widely considered one of the most rigorous and best in the area and the state, with Guilderland schools having one of the highest rates of Regents diploma graduates in the Capital District.
Although Guilderland retains much of its rural character, it is easily accessible to I90 and I87 for easy commuting to surrounding cities. Amtrak rail service is available nearby at stations in Schenectady (8 miles) and Albany/Rensselaer (13 miles), and Albany International Airport is 8 miles away. University at Albany, Excelsior College, College of St. Rose, Union and Schenectady Community College are all within 10 miles of Guilderland. Median household income is above the state average.
