IMAX Theatre Opens At Crossgates
Capital Region's first IMAX Theatre opened at Crossgates Mall on November 7, 2008.
GUILDERLAND NY - The rumors are true. Crossgates Mall now has an IMAX Theatre! The new theatre opened Friday, November 7, 2008. The first movie to show was the IMAX format of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
IMAX Theatres offer a true-to-life movie experience with the latest visual technology, presenting you with a crystal-clear picture quality and often 3-D capabilities. These stunning images fill your peripheral vision, and coupled with the theatre's incredible wraparound digital sound system, they make you feel like you are "in the movie." There are currently about 300 IMAX theatres throughout the world, over 100 of them being in the US.
Crossgates Mall converted one of their existing theatres within the Regal Cinema 18 complex into the big-screen IMAX film format. The new theatre features an oversized screen (51 x 27 feet!) with slightly curved edges and 3-D capabilities.
This is the first IMAX Theatre in the Capital Region.
Currently, Proctors in Schenectady has an IWerks theatre with a similar format, and Colonie Center offers two screens in their new 13-screen cinema that are equipped with a 3-D "Real D" technology. But before the Crossgates IMAX, Capital Region residents had to catch Blockbuster flicks at one of the 10 IMAX theatres in New York State, including those in Syracuse, Rochester and New York City.
The open date for the new IMAX theatre was Friday, November 7, 2008. Young and old alike flocked to the mall to catch "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa: The IMAX Experience" on the big screen. The new theatre debuts just in time for the start of the holiday shopping season.
